9 Common Kitchen Disasters & How To Fix Them

4. Too Oily

Occasionally, when you’re cooking something, you might realize you’ve added too much oil into it. If it’s a soup or stew, one way to get rid of the excess oil is to refrigerate it. The fat will solidify and float to the top and you can remove it easily. If you’re in a hurry, you can stir a few ice cubes into your dish. The fat will stick to them, but you’ll have to work fast and remove them before they dissolve.

Alternatively, you could use lettuce leaves to skim the oil floating on top. Similarly, paper towels and pieces of bread will also do the job perfectly.

5. Burnt Cake

If you notice the top of your cake if browning too fast while the inside still has a while to go, take the pan out and cover it with some aluminum foil. But if the top is too far gone, let the cake cool down and just slice the burnt part off.

6. Overcooked Foods

When it comes to overcooked foods like mushy vegetables or rice, there’s little you can do to save them at the moment. You probably will have to start over with a new batch for the current meal.

But, that doesn’t mean you have to throw them away either. You can save them to make other dishes. For e.g. overcooked rice can be used to make rice balls, rice pudding or fried rice, and vegetables can be blended into a creamy soup, vegetables purees, etc.
